~Cats & Kittens - FAQ - Breeder's Registration
Questions and Answers about Registering Pedigree Cats and Kittens
All breeders must be registered annually with an approved governing cat control body
Why should I become a Registered Breeder?
It makes good business sense as most people wanting to buy a kitten prefer to purchase from a cattery which has some checks and balances. Concerned kitten purchasers would know that the Council does not support or endorse breeders who are convicted of neglect or abuse of cats or have untreated illness and would remove them from the list of registered breeders, so they are confident when they come to you that you have fulfilled all requirements.
How do I become a Registered Breeder?
Choose a registering body in your state. If you choose to register with FCCQ Inc go to the Forms page on this site and click on complete the Breeders Registration Form C
How do I get a Prefix?
Please contact our Registrar / Membership Officer, Ros Bird, by phone or email. You will be sent a form which requires you to think of at least five possible prefixes. List them in preference. This goes to a central body and no other breeder regardless of which council they register with can use the prefix you are awarded. There is a yearly renewal to keep this prefix but should you have a hiatus from breeding a considerable amount of time must pass before it is awarded to anybody else if ever.
Can I have more than one prefix?
Yes - there is no limit to the Prefixes that a breeder can have. Some breeders who have different breeds e.g.; Persian and Rex prefer to have a different Prefix so they can keep track of offspring more easily.
Why should I join a club?
A club will be composed of people who love cats, so immediately you have a common interest. There will be people with many more years of experience with breeding and behavioral problems associated with your breed of cats. This is invaluable. Also clubs have a delegate who is your representative on the Council and will be your voice for any concerns. Clubs can also be a social arena for good times and new friends
What are my Obligations?
Under Cats and Kittens section we have a list of requirements called the Code of Ethics for Hobby Breeders. Most are just common sense but all need to be followed if you are to continue to be a registered breeder with this council.
What are my Councils Obligations?
Our aim is to promote responsible breeding and ownership including the desexing of cats sold as pets and control of feral and stray cats.
We also support those people actively involved in rescue work.
As a Governing Body, FCCQ Inc. offers its Clubs and breeders advice, guidance and support when possible.
We hold regular monthly meetings where Delegates from each member Club are represented and general business regarding the Cat Fancy is discussed and deliberated.
Affiliated Clubs of FCQ Inc. run regular cat shows and are active in promoting and displaying cat breeds to educate and inform the general public.
The FCCQ Inc. has a fully computerized system of record keeping and can therefore offer breeders fast and accurate services of the highest possible quality.
How many different breeds can I have?
FCCQinc allows a breeder to have up to 3 different breed types. However interrelated breeds e.g.; Siamese and Orientals are considered one type.
Can I inter breed them?
You can certainly interbreed interrelated cats. If you breed a Siamese and Burmese together you get a Tonkinese etc. However if you want to breed say a Manx and a Persian together and start off a new breed, you have to apply to the registering council for an experimental license which had strict guidelines they will inform you of.
Why do I have to register kittens?
Registering kittens not only gives the Cat Fancy accurate information on all breeds, it can help track owners of lost pets. It also prevents accidental inbreeding of Pedigreed Cats. Kittens also need to be registered if you or the new owners wish to participate in shows.
Up to what age can I register kittens?
Kittens must be registered no later than nine months of age with FCCQinc
Where do I get information about my breed?
As mentioned before joining a club is a good idea because of access to other breeders. The Internet is invaluable and of course books. Observe your cat!
I am already a Registered Breeder can I register with FCCQinc?
